Application of LED Tunnel Lighting on Highways

As a new type of light source, LED has excellent performance and good energy-saving effects. Nowadays, it is widely used in highway tunnel lighting, fully responding to the strong call for energy conservation and emission reduction.


Characteristics of LED Tunnel Lighting Fixtures


Compared with ordinary sodium lamps, LED fixtures have higher actual luminous efficiency, reaching85~130lm/W. Although sodium lamps can emit light at360°, their actual luminous efficiency is only70~120lm/W.LED light sources have a longer lifespan, theoretically up to30,000~50,000 hours. In practical applications, this may be relatively reduced, but compared to high-pressure sodium lamps with a lifespan of 4,000~6,000hours, the lifespan advantage is very obvious.


In addition, LED tunnel lighting fixtures have higher color rendering index and lower color temperature. Color rendering index relates to the clarity of illumination; the higher the color rendering index at the same brightness, the easier it is to see objects clearly. From an environmental protection perspective, LED fixtures are also better than ordinary high-pressure sodium lamps and do not cause significant environmental pollution. However, LED fixtures are relatively expensive. As a new type of lighting product, their price is 3~4 times that of ordinary high-pressure sodium lamps.


Advantages of Highway LED Tunnel Lighting Fixtures


With the continuous increase in the number of highway tunnels, the operating lighting costs of tunnels are also continuously increasing. The promotion and application of LED tunnel lighting fixtures are imperative. Leveraging the advantages of LED tunnel lights can effectively solve problems in the highway tunnel lighting system.


According to actual calculations, in the same brightness environment, the power required by LED lamps is 60% of that of high-pressure sodium lamps, and the lighting power consumption is also about 60%. Therefore, the use of LED lamps can effectively save lighting power consumption, making the power-saving effect very obvious. In the long term, operating lighting costs will be significantly reduced. In terms of lifespan, LED tunnel lighting fixtures have double the lifespan of ordinary high-pressure sodium lamps. During long-term operation, the replacement frequency of LED fixtures is relatively low, and maintenance costs are also relatively low. From the standpoint of color rendering, although there is currently no standard for tunnel LED lighting systems, most designs are based on the characteristics of high-pressure sodium lamps. Under such circumstances, LED fixtures will give a brighter perception.


In fact, under the same recognition conditions, LED tunnel lighting fixtures require lower brightness for the same visual effect, meaning that as long as standards for LED fixtures are established and illumination norms standardized, brightness indicators will be reduced, and consequently, power and electrical consumption will also decrease.
